ABOUT US

Our Company

For the first 70 years of Lovells' history, The Lovell family and their employees forged a tradition of high performance, based on maintaining quality rather than selling down to a price.

This history gives Lovells unique experience, technical skills, and the knowledge of our clients' needs.

New investment and plant expansion and relocation in 2001 means that Lovells now can offer world class manufacturing facilities for our high and low volume customers all over the world.

The unique Lovell manufacturing range covers every spring from monsters for 200 tonne locomotives made from 56mm high tensile hardened spring steel, to 7mm induction hardened wire springs for a junior Formula car.

It covers automotive springs, springs for passenger and freight wagons and mineral processing shaker springs. We make agricultural springs for scarifers and cultivators.

We supply springs designed and built to withstand extreme operating conditions including super high temperatures, e.g. in steam safety valves, super low temperatures e.g. trains in China and Russia, mild acid immersion as in coal and gold processing equipment, and extreme fatigue as in mineral shaker springs operating at 20 Hz. We also make stainless steel springs to withstand severe acid conditions.

  • To manufacture to the highest Standard, springs that suit our client needs;
  • To understand our client needs by gaining a depth of knowledge as to the ultimate use of the spring;
  • To use whatever means to prevent the importation of substandard springs for the Australian industrial sector, in particular, the rail rolling stock sector, by exposing sub standard workmanship; and
  • To press regulators and government authorities to implement the strongest Standards for Australian rail safety as are cost effective to the industry.

Facilities

Lovells have the largest hot spring coiling plant outside the USA and China, with an annual capacity of 8000 metric tonnes per annum. Springs made from 4 mm wire to 65 mm bar are coiled in our Carrington N.S.W plant, in bar lengths up to 12 metres, all surface peeled in-house. Finished spring testing equipment handling up to 40 tonnes static load capacity and 5 tonnes load at 4 cycles per second dynamic capacity are fully certified.

Our computer spring design software can handle the most complex configuration of variable pitch, wire diameter and coil diameter to find a design that will meet your fatigue life needs.

Our endurance test rig can cycle your spring design or rail damper prototypes at one million cycles per week at up to five tonnes oscillating load, allowing rapid proving-up of any new design. A lateral test facility can force simultaneous lateral deflections to model any real life bogey behavior.

Lovells stock an unrivalled range of raw materials.

Grades of spring stocked include:

  • Silicon Carbon
  • Silicon Carbon Vanadium
  • Chromium Carbon
  • Chromium Carbon Silicon
  • Chromium Carbon Nickel Molybdenum

Lovells stock both induction hardened and cold drawn wire types up to 16mm diameter in our on-site cold coiling department.
